Cardinal Report: Preparing For Week 2

Az. Cardinals Giddy Over Big Win
Time To Get Back To Work

The Arizona Cardinals looked very good winning the season opener, 23-13, in San Francisco. Enjoying a first, game victory and sitting atop the NFC West Division, it is almost like winning the Super Bowl...almost. This is no time for celebration. Maybe a high five or two, but let's not over do it. This season is very young. With fifteen more games on the schedule, one victory is not so significant. Good, but not great. I think it's time for the Cardinals to refocus and get back to work.

This Sunday the Arizona Cardinals host the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins are a young team who still haven't found themselves. A team like Miami, with a new roster and not much history, can be very unpredictable. With an 0-1 record, coming into Arizona, the Miami Dolphins may seem like an easy win. But, they cannot be overlooked.

With Chad Pennington as quarterback, the Miami Dolphins do have some kind of veteran leadership. It can't hurt. Pennington did have good games in New Jersey and would still be playing for the Jets had they not decided to hire Brett Favre.

Miami played against the Jets in week one and the Dolphins, even though they lost, performed well against New Jersey. Brett Favre and his Jets came away with the, 20-14, victory, but it wasn't pretty. Favre rolled the dice a few times on this win. He's lucky it didn't come up "snake eyes".

The Dolphins also have retired, headcoach Bill Parcels (Executive Vice-President of Operations) up in the booth. I'm not, exactly, sure what it is that he does, but I know Bill doesn't like to lose. Miami is coming into town with some weapons. If the Cardinals expect to win, especially at home, the Dolphins must not be under-estimated.

Hard work, great leadership, and solid, team effort are the key elements to building a winning force. A team must possess the willingness to overcome all obstacles and the drive to endure and to conquer. This is what it takes, not only to reach the play-offs, but to win the Super Bowl.

Play-offs? The Arizona Cardinals have alot of work to do before they start thinking about the play-offs.  Defensively, the Cardinals are looking strong. There are a few concerns on defending the run, which must be addressed. Runningbacks are setting yardage records against our defense.

The Cardinals biggest concerns are, definitely, on it's offense. As starting quarterback, Kurt Warner, it seems, is having trouble making touchdowns. He doesn't appear to have any  trouble moving the offense down the field and getting to the Red Zone. He just can't seem to plug it in.

As Warner gets old trying to impress the nation that he can win another ring, our boy, Matt Leinart is just sitting there, getting rusty on the bench. I am not saying that Leinhart should be the starting QB, that could be disasterous and I'm not that confident in his performance, but he did show alot of  promise in the final preseason game against the Denver Broncos. Maybe he'll be able to get some playing time throughout the season. He needs to stay prepared and aware as anything can happen.

    The quarterback controversy continues on...

Running is a plus this year for the Cardinals. With charged up runningback duo, Edgerinn James and J.J. Arrington, the Cards look strong. Arrington was out with a stomach virus, last week and was replaced with rookie Tim Hightower. Hightower, who is also showing promise, recorded 8 carries for 13 yards and one touchdown. James carried the ball for 100 yards.

Yes Folks, the Cardinals are showing that they have the potential to be a winning team. Not just Mediocre. A team with it's eyes on the play-offs. The Super Bowl...A trophy in the desert. But, let's not get carried away, of course, we still have to beat Miami.
